If you are investing in the growth of your business, you will naturally want to make sure that your efforts make the maximum impact in reaching your growth goals. However, as a small business owner you wear a lot of hats and in the midst of all the demands of running a business, it can be challenging to figure out exactly how you can reach these goals and what methods will produce the most impactful and lasting results. To help get you started, we’ve created a few points to consider when taking steps to grow your business!
1-) Optimize your website. Obviously, if you do not have a website yet, you’ll want to create one. You can do this through a range of options from a self-created platform to out-sourcing to a web company. Whatever method you choose, you will want to make sure that your website is “optimized”. What does this mean? There is this thing called “SEO” (maybe you’ve heard this term?). SEO stands for “Search Engine Optimization”. When a site is optimized, it has a positive SEO rating. So why is this important? Well, to keep the answer short and sweet, search engines (Google, etc.) look for certain things on websites. They look for cues as to what the site, blog, etc. is about so that it can rate, organize, and retrieve applicable information. Your goal is to have your business show up as high as possible in search engine results when someone types in a topic or name associated with your business. The top three results that display on an internet search are paid results. This means that the company, site, or business paid the search engine to put them in the top 1-3 spots when that category was searched. However, spots 4+ are what are called “organically rated” spots. This means that those sites earned those higher slots in search engine results by guiding or attracting people to their site, video, blog, or page. Organic traffic is an AWESOME thing to achieve for a business as it is one of the strongest marketing successes (because people are driving business to you)…..and it saves you a LOT of money. Having a website that is optimized allows people to better find your site, which, in turn, results in more visits to your page or site…which drives your organic search results. Cool, huh?
TIP: In addition to optimizing your website, you want to make sure that you have also:
Made your site easy to navigate: Don’t frustrate your visitors with a bunch of pop-ups and hard-to-find back pages. If you want them on your site….make it user friendly.
A picture is worth a thousand words: Don’t use outdated pictures or images that are unprofessional, unclear, or not applicable. Keep your site fresh.
Write well: You will lose credibility with your audience if your wording and content is unclear or poorly written. The quality of the writing, wording, grammar, spelling, etc. on your website can be the difference between a new client and a tarnished business image.
Keep it simple: It doesn’t have to be flashy. Keep it simple, clean, updated, relevant, and applicable.
2-) Register with Google Analytics. A lot of my clients ask me, “if we do these steps in our marketing, what percentage of return will we have in the next 30 days?” or, “By how much will my revenue increase in a week if I post to social media?”. Unfortunately, when you are starting to marketing your business, a huge part of your efforts will be creating a presence and getting into range of awareness of your target audience. Could you get immediate business from one social media post? Of course! But it’s way more likely that you’ll start to see results with consistent use of your marketing strategy. Does this mean that there is no way to track the impact of your marketing plan? Absolutely not! One of my favorite tools that I recommend to all my clients is to set up an account for Google Analytics. This is a free service that you can create a profile for through a Google account and it allows you to monitor all your website or media traffic. Did you optimize your site and now you’re wondering, “But did it help?”…..check out your Analytics platform. It provides awesome insight into the traffic and audience that is visiting your sites and allows you to modify your plan so you stay effective, efficient, and on track for growth.
3-) Talk to your clients. It is always amazing to me how many business owners do not reach out to their clients. By no means am I recommending that you spam people. Far from it! However, if you are not reaching out to your clients periodically, you will fall out of their range of awareness. The next time they need your service…..you want them to think of you. So how can you do this? Invite your clients to like your media pages. Post relevant content on your Facebook page that is helpful to them. Send them periodic emails offering coupons, discounts, new products or services, or any other topic that is relevant and helpful to them. Send them birthday and holiday cards. You loyal clients are your biggest fans and your most valuable marketing resource. Remember how I mentioned above that organic traffic is awesome on your website and media? Well, your loyal clients can help you reach this. They also can refer you to friends and family that may need your services. Treat them well, always thank them, and stay in front of them.
